National contribution to the development of the LCG computing grid for elementary particle physics

Contract: 8EU / 03.01.2012

Project value: 5.464.123 RON

CONDEGRID is a support project for the participation of the Romanian Tier-2 Federation RO-LCG to the WLCG international collaboration, in the framework of the National Programme for Scientific Research, Capacities-III, which is funded by the National Authority for Scientific Research.

The main objective of the LHC Computing Grid project (LCG), which was approved by the CERN Council in 2001, is to develop and maintain the distributed computing infrastructure which is required for the storage, processing and analysis of the data produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN.
Due to the complexity of the distributed LCG network, the fulfillment of the technical conditions this must satisfy in order to be useful to the worldwide LHC community is possible only if the development and the exploatation of the grid is well coordinated. This is the reason why the Worldwide LCG collaboration (WLCG) was initiated by CERN in 2005, in the aim of the global coordination of the local entities which are connected to the Grid.
Romania has joined WLCG in 2006, committing itself to contribute to the LHC Computing Grid with resources and personnel, which are grouped in the Romanian Tier-2 Federation RO-LCG.
The CONDEGRID poject, financed by the National Authority for Scientific Research, is focused on the development and exploitation of the national Grid system for the storage, processing, and analysis of the data for ALICE, ATLAS, and LHCb experiments, aiming at unifying all the existing national LCG resources in the framework of RO-LCG.
