National contribution to the development of the LCG Computing Grid for Elementary Particle Physics (CONDEGRID)

Contract: CERN 5 / 25.11.2024

Duration: Nov. 2024 - Dec. 2026 (26 months)

CONDEGRID is the support project for the participation of the Romanian Federation RO-LCG to the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) collaboration, in the framework of the National Plan for Research and Innovation - III, module 5/5.2/CERN-RO. The project is funded by the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitization.

The main objective of the CONDEGRID project is to increase the integration of RO-LCG into the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) ecosystem by improving the quality of services it provides to ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb experiments, as well as strengthening the participation in the implementation of the computational strategy for the support of Run 4.

The project funds the following: a) the coordination, operation, development and maintenance of the national system of distributed resources and services provided by the Romanian Tier 2 Federation (RO-LCG) within the WLCG collaboration, in accordance with the WLCG Memorandum of Understanding (MoU); b) software development for the computational support of the research infrastructure.

CONDEGRID results in: Grid service quality improvement, better reliability of data communication with WLCG and between national centres, enhanced collaboration between partners in view of optimal resource management and purchase costs optimization, adequate human resources organization for avoiding fragmentation, dissemination and outreach of RO-LCG achievements and of the results of the project.

Targeting also the long term support of the LCG, the project will adapt the federation to major technical changes, and will increase its capacity to follow the development directions outlined in the WLCG Strategy towards HL-LHC.
